The Living Score is a long-term artistic response to the changing sound and character of From Stone to Sky.

Conceived by harpist and electronic composer Jemima Phillips, The Living Score will explore how listening, field recording, composition and collaboration might allow the landscape to shape an evolving musical work.
Developing alongside The Observatory, it creates a parallel artistic record of place and time.

The Living Score begins by listening to what is already here.
Field recording, site-responsive composition, film and collaboration will build an evolving creative record of the estate over time.

The Living Score is a forthcoming year of artistic research and development led by composer and harpist Jemima Phillips.
Rooted in From Stone To Sky, it will explore how the sounds, seasons and changing ecology of the estate might shape new music — through listening, field recording and experimentation.

ARTISTIC VISION
A landscape that becomes part of the music.
At From Stone To Sky, the landscape is more than a setting or source of inspiration. It has the potential to become an active participant in the music.
Through harp, electronic composition, field recordings and creative collaboration, Jemima will investigate how the sounds, vibrations and changing conditions of the estate might shape an evolving work.
Potential collaborations with ecologists, researchers, sound artists and creative technologists, the project will explore techniques including hydrophones, contact microphones, environmental sensing and the translation of ecological data into sound.

THE ARTIST
Jemima Phillips
Jemima Phillips is a harpist, composer and immersive sound artist working across original composition, electronic sound, film and site-responsive performance. Her practice explores the expressive possibilities of the harp beyond conventional boundaries, bringing acoustic and electronic worlds into conversation.
A graduate of the Royal College of Music and former Official Harpist to the then Prince of Wales, Jemima has created music for major cultural and commercial projects, including the launch of the Rolls-Royce Spectre and two feature sets for Farnborough International Airshow in 2026.
Her forthcoming project, The Living Score, marks a new chapter in this practice: a research-led exploration of how music might emerge from a sustained relationship with place, listening to the sounds, seasons and ecological changes of the landscape she calls home.
A musical memory of place.
LONG TERM COMPOSITION
The ambition is to create a living composition that grows with the landscape.
Recordings, observations and new musical material could accumulate across seasons and years, allowing the work to develop a memory of the estate — one that continues to evolve beyond any single performance or artist’s presence.
In time, visitors might encounter The Living Score through listening journeys across the land, performances in an earthen sound bowl and a permanent sound installation within the historic farmstead.
These are possibilities to be researched and developed, rather than completed installations.
THE OBSERVATORY & LIVING SCORE

The Living Score will develop in dialogue with The Observatory, drawing on the estate’s growing ecological record while creating a parallel artistic record of place and time.
At its heart is a simple question:
What might we hear if we allowed a landscape to participate in its own composition?
The first chapter is taking shape.
THE NEXT CHAPTER
Recordings, compositions and moving images will form an accumulating body of work, shaped by the sounds and changing conditions of the estate.
